There are many excellent natural ways to keep senior pets healthy, strong, and disease free. This page will tell you many of the things that can be done to help keep your best friends healthy, happy, and long lived, so you can enjoy their healthy companionship for as long as possible. Do not accept the status quo as to the longevity of a particular breed of animal, because many many pets far outlive the normal standards, by 5 or more years with mindful care.

Let's start at the top:

SENIOR PET NUTRITION

#1 Diet Is Number One!

The food your pet consumes each and every day can help promote or deteriorate your pet's health. Feeding species appropriate nutrition will help promote optimal health and prevent disease. We have been feeding species appropriate nutrition (aka raw meat and bones) to our canines and felines since 1998. When those pet food recalls occur, some people have lost every dog and cat they owned to the recalled foods! Others have gotten severely ill after eating one small can of the recalled pet food, incurring weeks of vet bills, and miserability for the pet and human. Human grade raw food is not recalled as often as traditional dry kibble and canned pet foods. Lots of canine and feline nutrition information is here: Animal Nutrition Information page. If you cannot feed a raw diet, please at least consider cooking your senior pet's food, instead of purchasing a bag or can of pet food.

APPROPRIATE WEIGHT

#2 Appropriate Weight

Senior pets can suffer from the same weight related ailments people do. Though many people feel a healthy pet is an overweight pet, it is a detriment to our pets to be overweight, just the same as it is for us to be overweight. Excess weight puts more strain on the heart, lungs, kidneys, liver, legs, joints, etc. Excess weight contributes to a shorter life expectancy and a much greater chance pets will suffer from arthritis, heart disease, skin conditions, asthma, etc.

IF your pet is overweight, consider some of the following tips to help them lose weight:

1. Increase daily exercise
2. Stop leaving food out 24/7. Any food not eaten within 5 to 10 minutes of feeding, pick it up and put it away. Leaving dry pet food out all day causes it to go stale, increases the chance your pet will be overweight as they can eat anytime they want, including when they are bored (just like people), and increases the chances they will have dental decay.
3. Fast your pet. If you normally feed your pet twice/day, fast on fresh water for one meal, once/week. If your pet is healthy, fast one day/week. This gives the digestive system a rest and allows your pet to detox some of the toxins from his/her body. We fast all the canines here at least one day/week. No carnivorous animal in the wild eats 7 days/week. Excessive feeding creates overwork for the digestive tract and excess fat.
4. Switch to a raw or cooked diet. Many pets lose weight after switching to healthier food, as often they keep consuming the dry/canned food because they aren't getting the proper nutrients their bodies need, so they keep eating in hopes of meeting their nutritional requirements.
5. Bored pets will eat more than those who are exercised and have lots of interesting things to do (aka entertainment). Keep your pet physically and mentally active - give them a job to do, etc. to help prevent boredom.
6. Food grade diatomaceous earth completely eliminates the need to give those horrible chemical (aka poison) wormers. If they have no intestinal worms or parasites, 70% of their chance of getting disease goes right out the window. Plus it contains over 15 minerals that are great for the skin, coat, bones, joints, etc. and helps promote excellent health. Worm free pets consume less food, as their are no worms sucking their blood and consuming the nutrients from their food, so it helps lessen your pet food bill.
7. Make sure your puppy gets plenty of good healthy exercise. For proper growth and healthful longevity, daily exercise, fresh air, and sunshine is essential for everyone.

Most people put poisons on weeds to kill them, so purposely putting a poison on our beloved animals is an absolutely insane notion. 2. Do NOT put poison heartworm preventatives in or on your dogs. Like the flea preventatives, these things are actual poisons that permeate the body for 30 to 60 days. These traditional preventatives do NOT "prevent" the mosquito from landing on your dog by making them smell nasty to mosquitoes, they just poison the blood, kidneys, liver, skin, and entire body, so when a mosquito bites them, it attempts to poison any infection the mosquito has left in the dog's blood stream. #6 Fresh Water

Be sure to change your pet's water bowl daily. Plenty of clean pure fresh water is essential to pet health just as it is for people. Preferably do not give city tap water.

#7 The Great Outdoors

Make sure your pet gets plenty of good healthy exercise. Senior pet's should be walking, running, and playing up until the day they die. For healthful longevity, daily exercise is essential for us and our pets, so make time to get both of you out for a daily walk.

ARTHRITIS, ACHES, & PAINS

#8 Aches & Pains of Aging

Sometimes older pets have mobility issues which hamper their comfortability and exercise levels. This can make their health decline more quickly. Some excellent natural alternatives to help alleviate arthritis, inflammation, aches, and pain are:

VACCINATIONS

#10 Vaccinations

Most pets have been vaccinated regularly. If your pet has ever had a reaction to a vaccination, which is usually seen within a minute to 3 months after being vaccinated, check with your county to see if they will accept rabies titers in lieu of the rabies vaccine OR a health exemption letter from your veterinarian stating that the rabies vaccine is detrimental to the health of your pet. Amber Naturalz Life Cell Support is excellent for pets who have had reactions to vaccines, as well as those who are going to be vaccinated or wormed. Give 3x/day for 30 days.

DVISION, & EAR HEALTH

#11 If your senior pet has bad breath, teeth, plaque, or ear health issues, the following can be excellent:

1. Pet Vision is excellent for senior pet eye health. For those with a blue, white haze on their eyes, dry eyes, and pets with cataracts. Good for active cataracts with clearing of the eyes within 36 days and for preventative eye health maintenance.
2. Otaxium Ear Drops helps support the normal functions of the ear, supports occasional aches and soreness to the outer ear.

SHOWS, TRAVELING, BOARDING

Paxaid is excellent to help reduce travel stress, calm, soothe the intestinal tract, help prevent vomiting, diarrhea, poor appetite, and boost the immune system. 2 to 4x/day is fine for this purpose.

Derma Nerv can be helpful for overactive animals to help calm, regenerate, and soothe the nerves. Beneficial to calm/lessen seizures as well.

Tossa K (formerly Kennel-Koff) can be given a day or two before the outing, along with the day(s) of the outing, and a few days afterwards to help prevent contraction of upper respiratory infections. Give twice/day for this purpose or 4x/day for 10 days for active upper respiratory infection.
