Natural Pet Health, Disease Prevention & Treatment

There are lots of excellent natural ways to keep incoming rescue animals healthy and disease free. This page will tell you many of the things that can be done to keep them healthy, prevent disease, and treat it naturally.

We get calls and e-mails from rescues daily, requesting donations of product and/or services. We realize that most rescues are broke and since we've rescued and fostered 100's of domestic and wild animals ourselves, we know all too well how expensive rescue can become. Due to our own experience with traditional medicine and traditional vets, we quit using traditional methods in 1996.

Going against the grain of what traditional veterinarians tell us and using natural methods with ALL incoming rescues. We have found that our expenses are much less, vet bills literally non-existent (excepting a needed spay/neuter surgery), and the animals stay healthy and heal more quickly than they did with traditional treatments.

Back when we relied on traditional medicine, our expenses were huge and we were ALWAYS broke, and the rescue animals weren't 100% as they should have been, especially with the money we'd spent at the veterinary clinic. After numerous traditional medicine disappointments and a recommendation or two to euthanize an animal, as the traditional vet said they wouldn't survive, and after ignoring his advice and taking them back home against the vet's recommendations only to see them heal 110% with natural methods, we finally realized traditional medicine was not the best route for us, our companions, or our fosters and rescues...I admit, it took more than a few veterinarian disappointments, which included unnecessary death - which was the final straw that pushed me over the edge.

Caring for foster and rescue animals naturally is actually very easy and much less expensive than caring for them traditionally.

The rescues we have donated time and product to, rave about the wonderful effectiveness of these terrific organic products. Yet, some rescues continue to go the traditional veterinarian route which quickly diminishes their financial resources and when their foster/rescues are still unhealthy and they can no longer afford to go back to the vet, they ask us to donate time and product.

Though we realize that every one is different and we all have different opinions, protocols, and preferences, we find it extremely frustrating when we often become the last resort, when we KNOW we should have been the FIRST choice. If our natural protocols were followed, these rescues would still have money in the bank, albeit they'd still be spending it because they could then afford to take in even more rescues - so they would be enlarging their rescue capacity, since they had more money in their accounts, due to healthier in home preventative care and treatment methods that didn't require expensive traditional drug treatment.

Mind you, more rescues than not, actually listen to and adopt our recommended methods and they boast that their puppies no longer get parvo or kittens no longer get panleukopenia with the preventative treatment below, as they instantly start preventative treatment as soon as a new puppy or kitten walks onto the rescue's premises. Rare occasions, when a puppy may get parvo or a kitten gets distemper they quickly and effectively treat them on site and they ALL heal 100%. Some rescues boast 100% success with preventative treatment even though, PRIOR to finding out about these natural effective methods, they had years of numerous parvo puppies and/or distemper kittens with expensive vet bills and often the animals did not survive the traditional hospital IV veterinary treatment.

Many rescues purchase 50 to 100 lbs. of food grade diatomaceous earth in lieu of theDE chemical wormers and toxic flea preventatives. This aids the immune system of ALL beings and again, diminishes disease in the animals they care for, which consistently lowers the rescue's financial expenses.

We were once in the same exact spot as some of you rescues are now. Fed up with too many fosters and rescues having health issues and regular vet bills. It took a lot of researching, reading, experimenting, and experience to get where we are at today - 110% holistic. And interestingly enough, it's truly very simple and easy, once you get the hang of it. Why do the wild life continue to thrive? Heck, they aren't treated with traditional medicine, nor do they get health check-ups at the vet office. Think about it.

And ask yourself, would you take that chemical wormer that you are administering to that tea cup Chihuahua - whether Strongid, Panacur, Nemex, Tasty Paste, Pyrantel, etc.? People have worms and parasites just as pets do. And if you won't take that chemical wormer, why on earth would you administer it to a helpless little puppy, kitten, horse, or other animal?

The Wikipedia definition of Disease is: "A disease or medical condition is an abnormal condition of an organism that impairs bodily functions and can be deadly. It is also defined as a way of the body harming itself in an abnormal way, associated with specific symptoms and signs."

Dis-ease is NOT a normal state of being, yet too many people and animals succumb to disease. For more information about how we view disease, please go to our Dis-ease web page.

Bottom line is our sympathy button has been exceeded, in cases where people don't listen. I realize not everyone has time to read, research, and educate themselves and I am aware of the fact that there is plenty of garbage on the internet which makes these tasks even more difficult. I can only tell you that we have been there, done that and we will NEVER go back to "that" because this natural method of raising, fostering, rescuing and just plain caring for animals is so very much better than traditional ever was. It has far exceeded our expectations and it has greatly simplified our lives, as well as the lives of the animals we care for. Unbelievable as it may sound, it is rare for anyone in our care to ever get sick. The only time we see a traditional vet is if someone needs a surgery and then we refuse traditional antibiotics and pain meds, as natural antibiotics and pain meds are simply far more effective and not toxic to the body.

So, once you get started and apply a little faith, you will see what we are talking about. The bright eyes, busy tails/feathers, and radiant health status of those in your care. You won't ever want to back track and go back to traditional methods. So, let's start at the top:

ALL INCOMING ADULT RESCUES

  1. Should be fed Food grade diatomaceous earth daily, as soon as your foster or rescue moves onto your premises. We use it as a natural wormer for our humans and animals 365 days/year. Food grade diatomaceous earth simply dehydrates roundworms, whipworms, hookworms, and tapeworms. Plus it provides 15 minerals that are great for skin and coat. DE is also excellent for the bowels. Compared to traditional "chemical" wormers (aka poisons), it is far cheaper and healthier and even more effective, as worms cannot build a resistance to it's dehydrating effects, as they have to chemical wormers. IF they (and we) have no parasites/worms:
    • The immune system is stronger which makes them less susceptible to coming down with disease.
    • The body absorbs the nutrients from the food more easily and readily, as there are no worms to consume the food or suck the blood. So, aside from making them healthier, this also lowers the food bill, as they don't need to eat as much as they do when the worms/parasites are sucking the nutrients out of their body.
    • Crawling Insect Control Diatomaceous Earth is excellent to dehydrate fleas. Read our No Flea web page. DE is non-toxic to the animals and lethal to insects.
    • Crawling Insect Control Diatomaceous Earth is also excellent to lower and even eliminate flies. Whether you foster/rescue dogs, cats, horses, chickens, pigs, cows, or elephants, DE is an absolutely excellent way to eradicate flies.
    • DE also helps detox heavy metals.
  2. Diet is number one. Species appropriate nutrition often eliminates allergies, poor appetites, and unhealthy animals. Our canines and felines consume over 800 pounds of bones and raw food each month. Raw food, along with food grade DE can often eliminate health issues, so provides an excellent basis to assess your foster/rescue health status. Lots of canine and feline nutrition information is here: Animal Nutrition page. The biggest issue here is when they are adopted out. Often dogs and cats that are fed real raw food will refuse to eat traditional kibbles, but as noted on our animal nutrition (canine/feline) web page, there are better quality human grade kibbles that can be fed, unless you can educate the adoptive owners about feeding species appropriate nutrition, which is optimum.
  3. Organic kelp contains over 60 vitamins, minerals, and amino acids that is easy assimilated by the body. This helps detox, promote healthy skin and coat, promotesKelp healthier offspring, better birth weights. increases lactation, and greater health. Feed it daily.
  4. Please do NOT put chemical flea or tick preventatives on your dogs and cats. These so-called "flea and tick preventatives" are actual POISONS. Most people put poisons on weeds to kill them, so purposely putting a poison on our beloved animal friends is an absolutely insane notion. Optimal health cannot be achieved by poisoning our pets. If fleas are a problem, start using food grade diatomaceous earth and visit our Natural No Flea web page.
  5. Do NOT put poison heartworm preventatives in or on your rescues. Like the flea preventatives, these things are actual poisons that permeate the body for 30 to 60 days. These traditional preventatives do NOT "prevent" the mosquito from landing on your dog by making them smell nasty to mosquitoes, they just poison the blood, kidneys, liver, skin, and entire body, so when a mosquito bites them, it attempts to poison any infection the mosquito has left in the dog's blood stream. Ever notice, the animals in the wild are not extinct from heartworm, west nile virus, or other diseases? Heck, they aren't on monthly Heartgard prevention. How is it possible all the canine species: wolves, dingos, foxes, coyotes, etc. are still alive and thriving? Think about it...Here is some information about Heartworm Medicine Linked to Sickness, Death.
  6. Plenty of clean pure fresh water daily.
  7. Plenty of good healthy exercise. Daily exercise helps keep their immune systems strong and healthy.
  8. 100% NZ Colostrum is excellent for canines and felines in particular. Great for the immune system, digestion, and excellent overall health.

PREGNANT FEMALES

  1. Aside from doing all the things above make sure to pamper mom and make sure she gets plenty of exercise. Animals that are confined to kennels, crates, small stables or other confined areas can have difficult births, some requiring C-Sections. One of the biggest reasons plenty of exercise is really important to pregnant females. They need room to stretch, walk and run daily. In the wild, canines, felines, horses, and all other animals are active - hunting down their species appropriate nutrition or browsing the meadows and pastures finding good things to nibble on. Birthing for them is but a simple hiccup in their daily routine largely because they are eating species appropriate nutrition AND because they get the regular exercise needed which helps make birthing quicker and easier.
  2. Read natural health books to help educate yourself (in ALL that spare time we know you don't have). There are 100's of natural pet health books, many of our favorites are listed on our Natural Animal Health Books web page.

PUPPIES, KITTENS, FOALS, & OTHER YOUNG ONES

  1. As soon as the puppy, kitten, foal, etc. start eating on their own, put food grade diatomaceous earth in their daily food. This will keep worms from eating them, their food, and/or sucking their blood and help prevent coccidia and giardia, plus sweep some bacteria and viruses out of the system, as well as provide 15 vital minerals to keep young ones healthy and strong. DE can be mixed in NZ Colostrum and puppies and kittens will lick it right up or added to their raw chicken liver, heart, gizzards, etc.
  2. Consider Dr. Jean Dodd's puppy vaccine protocol, starting with a single parvo/distemper vaccine at 9 weeks of age, then again at 12 weeks, then once at a year of age. No other vaccines except rabies as allowable by law. For kittens, she recommends TWO Trivalent (distemper, herpes, & calicivirus) KILLED (NOT modifiedAmber Naturalz Life Cell Support live) vaccinations, one at 8 weeks of age and another at 12 weeks of age. Give Life Cell Support for 1 to 2 weeks prior to getting vaccinations and for 30 days afterwards, twice/daily to help alleviate the stress on the body and help sweep the toxins out of the blood, liver, and lymphatic system.

ADOPTION CLINICS, TRAVEL, VET VISITS, & BOARDING

Many natural things can be done to prevent disease, when the possibility of being exposed exists. Traveling animals can be dosed preventatively, so that anything viral, bacterial, or fungal will not affect them, when/if exposed to disease.

  1. Paxaid Digestive Rescue is excellent to help reduce travel stress, calm, soothe the Paxaid intestinal tract, help prevent vomiting, diarrhea, poor appetite, and boost the immune system. 2 to 4x/day is fine for this purpose.
  2. Derma Nerv can be helpful to overactive animals to help calm and soothe the nerves.
  3. Tossa K (formerly Kennel-Koff) can be given a day or two before the outing, along with the day(s) of the outing, and a few days afterwards. Tossa K assists in keeping your dog healthy while they are at kennels, boarding schools, dog shows, parks and other public areas.

We have found that utilizing natural methods, which always strive to boost the immune system of the animal are extremely effective, both health wise and cost wise. It provides a consistent basis for raising and treating animals, when traditional medicine has failed us and our foster and rescue animals by providing below par treatment, expense, and services. This saves us thousands of dollars annually and promotes healthier animals for adoption, far fewer health issues that need treatment, which obviously results in longer lived pets and happier adoptive guardians.
